Trial run

Tonight we have a young man coming to live with us. I guess it is kind of a trial run for adoption because he will be with us for a few months. His name is Alex and he is from China. This is his second year living in the boarding houses at Ben Lippen which is the school on the campus where we live. Here is how it happened:

My sister and her family have 'adopted' Alex into their family and have had him in their home often. We met him last Easter and were very impressed with him. We knew he was wanting to live with a family, my sister didn't have room for him, so we filled out the application at the end of the school year, before we applied with Lifetime Adoption. Near the middle of the summer Alex told us that his parents did not want to pay the extra fees for him to move out of the boarding house.

Later in the summer we were contacted by Ben Lippen saying that there was a potential need for us to have Alex in our home, this time it would be free to him because the houses were full. Once again the door was closed because they still had space for him. We settled into our beginning of the school year routine.

Thursday we received an email saying that two new boarding students were on their way and they for sure had a need for Alex to move somewhere. Yesterday we got word that his parents approved of him moving in with us and we frantically got our spare room (read this as room full of all sorts of stuff which is now in random places all over the apartment) ready for Alex.

Some neat God things that happened along the way:

  • Alex left school in the spring not having very good English scores so wouldn't be allowed to move out of the boarding houses. He worked very hard over the summer and scored high enough to be at the top of the list of students able to move off campus.
  • He had a hard summer and is now much more open to the Gospel and has been asking more questions.
  • My sister just this week had a conversation with him, encouraging him that God would take care of all his needs.
  • We will get paid to house Alex which will help finance our adoption.
  • This summer I was praying for opportunities to touch the world and now the world is coming to us.
We aren't sure how it will all work out but we are excited to see what God will do through this season.
